BIOLOGYCAL ACTIVITY OF LIPOPOLYSACCHARIDES (ENDOTOXINS) OF RALSTONIA SOLANACEARUM

L.D. Varbanets, N.V. Vinarskaya

It was firstly carried out serotyping of Ralstonia solanacearum strains tested on the basis of variations of the O-specific polysaccharide (O-PS) structures of their lipopolysaccharides (LPS). The immunochemical heterogeneity of R. solanacearum species is shown. The strains tested which are characterised by 8 types of O-PS structures were applied to 5 serogroups. The first serogroup is represented by the strains which are characterised by different structure types, while the second, third, fourth and fifth groups include the strains with only single type of O-PS structure. The LPS of strains tested were also heterogeneous on their fatty acid composition: one group contains in their lipid A hydroxylated fatty acids with the chain from 12 to 18 carbon atoms, while another — with shorter number of carbon atoms, from 10 to 14. The study of such endotoxic LPS properties as toxicity and pyrogeneity showed that some of strains tested contained LPS more toxic and pyrogenic with the rest ones (LD50 8—12 mkg/mouse and 30—40 mkg/mouse, respectively).

The comparable investigation of native and modified LPS indicates that both phosphate and acyl groups in participate displaying of pyrogenic and toxic properies.
