At least two types of cell death are known: apoptosis and necrosis. Dysregulation of apoptosis contributes to the pathogenesis of many human diseases. Special attention in this review is devoted to the peculiarities of apoptosis induction and its role in the development of patological processes in brain, heart, liver and kidney. Prospects of clinical applications of drugs with antiapoptotic effect are disscused.
