The latest publications concerning development of the oxidative stress in humans and animal populations exposed to lead and other heavy metals are discussed. It is emphasized that acute or chronic lead exposure could stimulate the process of free radical generation and decline the scavenging antioxidant system, resulting in development of the oxidative stress and possible activation of apoptosis. Exogenous antioxidants often appeared effective in prevention of the lead-associated impairments, suggesting the role of antioxidant systems in prevention of the consequences of lead intoxication.
