MICROELEMENT SELENIUM - TOXICANT OR ANTITOXICANT?

L.F. Shchelkunov

Selenium concentration analysis in human organism tissues demonstrates a wide geographical variation on selenium status, correlating to the geografic variation of selenium content in food products. It is normally, that population with the least selenium consumption (selenium deficient regions of China, New Zealand, Finland) also have the lowest selenium concentration in blood. And vice versa.

What for Odessa region, the revealed by us existence in soil of selenium local concentrations displays only in gystogram form faint disorder of average selenium content in donors blood serum.

The results obtained allowed to reveal an unhomogenious provision of Odessa region population by selenium, that shows in existence of 3 population groups: with lowered (less than 100 mcg/l), normal (100-120 mcg/l), connected with the presence of local toxical microelement concentrations in soil.
